Textile Exchange’s white paper is a response to the GMO discussions in several African countries that are seriously considering the introduction of GM cotton, promising significant financial benefits.
“This white paper is extremely important for the promotion of organic cotton farming in African countries. Over the past 25 years that bioRe Foundation has been working in both Tanzania and India, we have observed the devastating negative impacts of GM cotton cultivation in countries like India, where the coexistence of organic and GM cotton is extremely difficult to maintain. While seeds are only one factor, organic farming is a holistic approach to healthy soils, balanced pest management and reliable market access that enables sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers,” Christa Suter, CEO of bioRe® Foundation.
