Covid-19 aid for India

Support for the bioRe® Mobile Health Unit in the current Covid-19 crises

India battles a catastrophic coronavirus wave

Hospitals overwhelmed

The country of 1.3 billion has become the latest hotspot of a pandemic

Right now, India is battling a catastrophic coronavirus wave and has become the latest pandemic hotspot. The country of 1.3 billion people recorded the highest daily number of covid patients in any country since the pandemic began. Hospitals are overloaded and there is huge demand for oxygen.

“The peak is yet to come,” says a doctor on Indian television from the city of Meerut. “In the middle of May, we expect it. Then we will have three times or four times as many patients. We need oxygen urgently. Urgently! Otherwise, many more people will die here.”, tagesschau reporting on April 28th.

bioRe® Foundation Switzerland provides aid

The mobile hospital or Mobile Health Unit (MHU) is a social project of the bioRe® Association in the central Indian region of Madhya Pradesh. The bus travels with local doctors through villages to provide basic health care to farming families.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the MHU has been active primarily with an awareness campaign, providing information on the correct technique of hand washing and the importance of social distancing, but also distributing masks.

Faced with a new, catastrophic Covid 19 wave, and with an X-ray machine available, the MHU decided to offer free X-rays to Covid patients. The X-ray can help identify whether a patient has pneumonia and, in a large number of Covid patients, help decide what interventions would be most useful.

“Our urgent need is oxygen concentrator equipment that can save lives”, says Dr. Shahina Ansari, project head of the mobile hospital, who has been providing medical services to farming communities since the project’s inception in 2006.

Oxygen concentrators are no longer available in India.

The bioRe® Foundation in Switzerland has already purchased 15 EverFlo oxygen concentrators, which will arrive by airfreight in Mumbai on May 9 and be transported to our project to meet the needs of farming families, bioRe® India Ltd and bioRe® Association India staff, and local hospitals in Madhya Pradesh.

The EverFlo 5-liter oxygen concentrator is portable, sustainable and very safe to use. It has proven reliable since the beginning of the pandemic for patients with respiratory problems due to Covid 19.
